Getting started

This guide takes you from installing Lensatic to a store that's ready to publish. Each step is short and links to a detailed guide when there's more to set up.

Add the theme to your store

  1. In the Shopify Theme Store, open Lensatic and add it to your store.

  2. In your admin, go to Online Store > Themes. Lensatic is in your theme library, unpublished, so you can set it up before customers see it.

  3. Click Customize to open the theme editor.

Prepare your catalog

Lensatic compares products by their type and their specifications, so a few details on each product do most of the work.

  • Type. Set the type in the Product organization section of each product, for example Ice screws or Helmets. Comparisons, the specifications table and “How it compares” group products by type.
  • Specifications. Add values such as weight or strength in product metafields. See Set up product specifications.
  • Weight. Enter the shipping weight on each variant. The product page can show it, and the cart adds it up.
  • Collections. Group products by activity or by kind of product. Lensatic uses the collection image and description at the top of each collection.

Tip

Smart collections save work: a collection with the condition Product type is equal to Helmets fills itself as you add products.

Set up menus

In your admin, go to Content > Menus.

  • Main menu is the header navigation. Nest collections under a parent item, such as Gear, to give each collection quick links to its neighbors and a breadcrumb.
  • Footer holds the links at the bottom of every page.

Build the home page

The home page comes with these sections. Each one shows placeholders until you pick its content in the theme editor.

Section What it needs
Hero An image, and a mobile image if the crop should differ on phones.
Activity finder A collection for each activity. See Set up the activity finder.
Featured collection A collection, plus optional links to related collections.
Image with products An image and the products it shows.
Product spotlight A product with specifications.
Blog posts A blog with a few articles.

Add filters

Filters let shoppers narrow a collection by price, availability or any specification. You add them in Shopify's Search & Discovery app. See Add collection filters.

Before you publish

  • Open a few product pages and check that the specifications show.
  • Open a collection on your phone and try the filters and the comparison.
  • Check that your payment methods and shipping are set up.

When everything looks right, go to Online Store > Themes, open the menu beside Lensatic and click Publish.
